A recently retired submarine commander has had harsh words for Australia's fleet of Collins-class diesel-powered submarines, reports the Australian.
Cmdr. James Harrap, a 20-year veteran, described the sub's powerplants as "the least reliable diesel engines ever built" and said efforts to upgrade the boats would only diminish their poor performance.
