Former Minister, An Ahmadinejad Ally, Arrested For Corruption

A close ally of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been arrested on charges of financial corruption, the Guardian (U.K.) reports.

The arrest of former Deputy Foreign Minister Muhammad Sharif Malekzadeh was reported Thursday.

Malekzadeh resigned from his post Tuesday after just a week in office.

A number of allies of the president have come under close scrutiny in what is seen as a growing rift with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
