Leonardo DRS announced on Dec. 16, 2025, the successful first on-orbit test of a new secure satellite communications system, XCM3-Space. The test was conducted in Low Earth Orbit aboard a Proteus Mercury satellite and validates a capability designed to improve secure data transport at the tactical edge. A second demonstration mission is planned for 2026 to expand on the system’s performance.
XCM3-Space, adapts next-generation encrypted, software-defined radio capabilities for use in space. Designed to counter emerging cyber and electronic warfare threats, it enables secure, reprogrammable communications across multiple frequencies and networks, supporting future space-based missions that require onboard processing and protected data exchange.
