The Iranian navy has commissioned into service a domestically-produced submarine that it claims is capable of launching cruise missiles, reports the semi-official Mehr News Agency (Tehran).

President Hassan Rouhani inaugurated the Fateh submarine during a ceremony on Sunday in the southern Hormozgan province, reported Al Jazeera (Qatar).

The 600-metric-ton submarine can launch cruise missiles via a vertical launch system, according to the semi-official Tasnim news agency (Iran).

The Fateh is also equipped with four torpedo tubes, eight naval mines and an advanced sonar system. It can operate at depths of 655 feet (200 m) for up to five weeks, according to the Iranian government.

Iran previously purchased submarines from Russia but they proved unwieldy in the shallow waters of the Persian Gulf.

The commander-in-chief of the Iranian navy, Rear Adm. Hossein Khanzadi, has said the submarine will undertake a mission in the Oman Sea.

The move coincides with the 40th anniversary of Iran's Islamic Revolution, which has been marked by speeches, military parades and defense announcements across the country.

More broadly, the announcement underscores the growing arms race across the region.
