India says it will upgrade weapons and equipment based on the island chains of Andaman and Nicobar in the eastern Indian Ocean, Defense News reports.
The move is widely seen as an attempt to counter China's growing influence.
The air force will place multirole Su-30MKI fighter jets on the islands and increase the number of operational airfields, officials said.
