The U.S. Navy will immediately begin allowing enlisted female sailors to sign up for submarine service, reports the Navy NewsStand.
Female officers were integrated more than two years ago on subs.
The plan was formally approved by Congress in December.
As ordered by the chief of naval operations, the plan includes the opening of all submarine ratings and Navy enlisted classification codes to enlisted females in fiscal 2015.
