The Naval Surface Forces Command has decided to keep the Navy's newest amphibious assault ship in San Diego ahead of final contractor trials due to ongoing engineering difficulties, reports the Navy Times.
Crewmembers discovered the undisclosed problem with the main reduction gear on the Makin Island (LHD-8) on Aug. 5 during a routine maintenance check, said a Navy spokesman.
