The British and United States governments are pressing the United Nations to lift sanctions against 18 former senior Taliban leaders as part of peace negotiations with the Taliban, reports the Guardian (U.K.).
Western officials said removing the sanctions would signify to militants that they would be able to reintegrate into Afghan society if they put down their arms.
