Drills In Latvia Prepare Battalion For Afghan Deployment

An Estonian army unit is in the midst of a week-long exercise in Adazi, Latvia, prior to its scheduled deployment to Afghanistan, reports Interfax-AVN (Russia).
The Steel Shield 2009 drills are designed to evaluate the Scouts Battalion's readiness for Afghan operations, said an Estonian spokesman.
The training focuses on combat skills, interoperability with mortar units and coordinating air support missions, including live-fire components.
