Dozens Arrested For Plotting Far-Right Coup

Authorities have arrested 25 people in Berlin on suspicion of plotting to overthrow the government, reports NBC News.

The suspects apprehended on Wednesday are all members of the Reichsburger movement, were said to be motivated by conspiracy theories about the role and legitimacy of the German government. The group is heavily influenced by right-wing conspiracy theories including the belief in a malign “deep state” and that the Federal Republic of Germany is not a sovereign state.

Members of this far-right movement range from a nobleman with a historic royal title to various armed forces veterans. All are set to appear in court on Wednesday and Thursday.

Germany’s domestic intelligence service has been observing the group since 2016 and believes it has nearly 21,000 adherents.
