The U.S. Marine Corps is still working on plans to develop a helmet capable of stopping a 7.62-mm rifle round, the Marine Corps Times reports.
The onetime goal of sending such helmets to Afghanistan by summer 2011 now seems less likely, said Marine officials.
Officials said they dismissed at least one helmet in testing. While rounds failed to penetrate the helmet, the resulting dent would probably have been fatal, they said.
