The U.K. and Iraq have agreed to open negotiations for an accord that would authorize British forces to remain in Iraq into 2009, reports the Times of London.
The negotiation decision was reached during a Baghdad visit by John Hutton, the new British defense secretary.
The U.K. plans to reduce the number of British troops in Iraq next year from 4,100 to several hundred.
