The Defense Ministry in Taiwan has allocated US$92.55 million over four years to begin building diesel-electric submarines, reports Reuters.
The spending would be the first since the plan for domestic sub production has been discussed since the early 2000s. The funds appear in the ministry's budget for 2016.
The funds cover only the contract design phase of what is expected to be a decades-long program.
