Defense Minister Becomes New Crown Prince

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah has named the defense minister as the new heir to the throne, reports the New York Times.

The move was expected.

Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz al-Saud, 76, was officially named crown prince on Monday, after Saturday's sudden death of Prince Nayef bin Albdulaziz al-Saud.

Prince Salman served as governor of Riyadh for nearly 50 years before his promotion in November to defense minister. He will keep that job.
