A Thai commander says that a domestic border defense unit has clashed with an armed unit of the United Wa State Army (UWSA) near the Thai-Burma border, reports the Bangkok Post.
The border unit spotted six armed UWSA personnel carrying backpacks thought to contain drugs into the Doi Lang area in Chiang Mai's Mae Ai district from Burma, said the officer.
The rebels reportedly fired on the Thai soldiers after being ordered to stop for a search.
