Conscription Winds Down After 100 Years

Sweden has just inducted its last batch of conscripted military personnel, reports Radio Sweden.

Beginning this summer, the Swedish armed forces will become a voluntary force, ending 100 years of mandatory military service.

Under the previous system, a third of the military was able to deploy within one year of mobilization.

Under the new design, all 50,000 military personnel will be available for deployment within a week, say officials.
