The Indian coast guard will soon establish a regional headquarters in Calcutta to help protect the nation's east coast, reports the India Press Information Bureau.
Regional HQ (Northeast) would be the coast guard's fifth regional headquarters, said Vice Adm. Anil Chopra, the head of the service.
The government said it is considering the request.
The coast guard has also proposed establishing more stations along the nation's 4,600 mile (7,500 km) coast.
