Georgian border guards say they briefly clashed with forces in the breakaway republic of Abkhazia Wednesday night, reports Xinhua, China's state news agency.
The Abkhazian forces provoked the fighting by firing at Georgian villages, according to the border guards. No casualties were reported.
Georgia said it informed the European Union observer group in the region of the incident. Russian and Abkhaz authorities have made no comment.
