The Venezuelan government has made its civilian militia a branch of the military, reports Reuters. On Feb. 1, the government’s official gazette announced that the militia would be considered an equal branch of the military, alongside the army, navy, air force and national guard. The service is expected to “organize, equip, train and indoctrinate the people” to bolster national security, the gazette said.
