China's Foreign Ministry has confirmed that three suspected Chinese smugglers were killed and a fourth wounded by North Korean border guards on Friday, Reuters reports.
Beijing has formally complained to North Korea, and an investigation was launched, a ministry spokesman said.
The victims were said to be citizens of the border town of Dandong in Liaoning province.
