The U.S. Navy is in the midst of qualifying its aircraft carriers to use electronic navigation systems instead of the traditional map, compass and pencil now used, reports the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Four of the service's 11 carriers are currently equipped with the necessary electronics, with the balance to receive the systems by 2013.
It takes around a year to become certified for operating the electronic navigation systems, and none of the carrier crews has yet qualified. ...
