Federal legislators and shipowners in the Great Lakes region are calling for more icebreaking vessels, reports the Port Huron (Mich.) Times Herald.
The representatives said the Coast Guard does not have enough icebreakers to keep up with the ice during the region's harsh winters. The aging of the service's icebreaker fleet is said to present another problem.
Shipowner associations have asked the government to fund a second Mackinaw-class icebreaker.
