The U.S. Navy's Free Electron Laser (FEL) program has achieved a significant breakthrough months ahead of schedule at the Los Alamos National Lab, N.M., reports the Office of Naval Research.
Late last month, researchers demonstrated an injector capable of producing the electrons needed to generate megawatt-class laser beams for future naval weapon systems.
A two-day preliminary design review of the program is planned for this week in Arlington, Va.
