Beijing Objects To Vietnam's Claims To Disputed Islands

The Chinese government has issued a strong protest over the passage of a new Vietnamese law that extends Vietnamese sovereignty over disputed islands in the South China Sea, reports Xinhua, China's state news agency.

The Vietnamese Parliament passed the "Vietnamese Law of the Sea" on Thursday, claiming the Xisha and Nansha islands.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Zhijun then summoned the Vietnamese ambassador in Beijing to formally protest the legislation.
