Turkish police have arrested more than 1,000 people within the police suspected of supporting a U.S.-based cleric blamed by the government for an attempted coup last year, reports the state-run Anadolu Agency.
A total of 1,009 suspects were picked up Wednesday in dawn raids across 72 provinces, said Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu.
Around 8,500 police have taken part in the operations. Raids were continuing and the numbers of those arrested are expected to rise, he said. ...
