The U.S. Navy has scaled back onetime plans to buy 54 attack submarines through 2040 in order to pay for new ballistic missile submarines, reports National Defense Magazine.
The latest 30-year shipbuilding plan now includes only 44 boats, a potential 20 percent reduction in the attack sub force, according to Rear Adm. Richard Breckenridge, deputy director of the Navy’s submarine warfare division.
