President Bashar Assad has ordered the Syrian military to crack down on a rebellious northern area of the country.
Government troops made wide-scale arrests Thursday in the northwest, randomly detaining males over the age of 16, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Hundreds of people have been arrested in the area around Jisr al-Shughour, an activist said.
The military appears to be preparing for a new campaign in that region, he said.
