Pakistan's army began a long-awaited air and ground offensive in the Taliban and Al-Qaida stronghold of South Waziristan on Saturday, reports CNN.
About 28,000 soldiers are battling an estimated 10,000 to 15,000 Taliban insurgents in the region, Pakistan's Dawn reported.
In the initial assault, Pakistani troops seized control of Kotkai, the home village of Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, said a military spokesman.
