The Maryland Army National Guard has deactivated a historic cavalry regiment, reports the Capital Gazette (Annapolis, Md.).
The 158th Cavalry Regiment cased its colors during a brief ceremony at the National Guard armory in Annapolis on Saturday.
The unit traces its history to the "Governors Guard" in 1877. It was constituted as a parent regiment in 1975.
The regiment's deactivation is part of structural changes as part of Army modernization efforts.
