December 17 2008

Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi army will deploy troops nationwide earlier than planned before the parliamentary elections scheduled for this month, reports the Press Trust of India.

Troop deployment will begin on Dec. 20 instead of Dec. 24 due to concerns over Islamist militants, said Sakhawat Hossain, the election commissioner.

The government also announced it would lift the state of emergency on Dec. 17.

Elections are scheduled for Dec. 29.
