The South Korean army has inaugurated a new ground command, reports the Yonhap news agency (Seoul).

In a ceremony on Tuesday, President Moon Jae In presented Gen. Kim Un Yong with the guidon of the newly established Ground Operation Command.

The command was launched at the beginning of the year by combining the 1st and 3rd Armies. Kim previously commanded the 3rd Army.

The new structure is part of larger reform effort to eliminate redundancy and enhance readiness.

During the ceremony, Moon emphasized that despite progress, lasting peace on the Korean peninsula has not yet been achieved and Seoul must remain vigilant in the face of continued threats.
