Amid Fighting With Taliban, Parliament Fails To Approve New Defense Minister

Lawmakers in Afghanistan have rejected another nominee by President Ashraf Ghani for defense minister, reports Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.

Mohammade Masson Stanekzai only received 84 of 231 votes on Saturday; 107 votes were required for approval.

Stanekzai was nominated as acting defense minister at the end of May. He previously headed the High Peace Council in charge of peace negotiations with the Taliban.
