Officials at the Pentagon and National Security Council are looking at new strategies for Afghanistan that would not require the number of American troops asked for by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the coalition commander, reports the Los Angeles Times.
Measures reportedly under consideration include closer cooperation with local tribal chiefs and regional warlords, using CIA agents as intermediaries and cash incentives, officials said.
