Somali government and African Union forces say they have secured an Al-Shabaab stronghold in the south, reports the Shabelle Media Network (Somalia).
Allied forces launched an offensive against the town of Balad early Tuesday, said military officials.
Militants withdrew from the town hours earlier and no shots were fired, said the officials.
The town, northeast of Mogadishu, had been under Al-Shabaab control for three years.
