A combined Afghan and international security force pursued a Taliban commander and his element in Kandahar province on Sunday, NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) reports.
The group is believed responsible for attacks in the Arghandab district, west of Kandahar City, said NATO military officials.
During the search, the joint force came under fire and called in an airstrike. About a dozen militants were killed, said officials.
