Air Force Chief Loses Post

President Dmitry Medvedev has fired the commander of the Russian air force, reports RIA Novosti.

Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin was also dismissed from military service on Friday, said the Kremlin. The Moscow Times noted that the 59-year-old was a year short of retirement age.

Zelin has held the position for five years. Under his watch, the service began receiving new equipment and aircraft for the first time since the collapse of the Soviet Union.
