Agreement Reached To Buy Island For U.S. Carrier Drills

The Japanese government has finalized a deal to purchase an uninhabited island in the southern Kagoshima prefecture for use by American carrier aircraft, reports the Kyodo news agency (Tokyo). 

On Monday, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga confirmed the purchase of the 3-square-mile (8-square-km) Mage Island for US$146 million. 

Mage Island is about 18 miles (40 km) southwest of the main Kyushu island.
