Japan's defense minister says Tokyo will end its refueling mission in January to support international military efforts in Afghanistan, Agence France-Presse reports.
The Indian Ocean mission began in December 2001 and was periodically renewed by Japan's previous government.
Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa said the ships will withdraw when current legislation supporting the mission expires.
