Chancellor Angela Merkel says that up to 850 additional German troops will be sent to the Afghan theater, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reports.
The announcement on Tuesday was part of the chancellor's statement on Germany's strategy for the future of Afghanistan.
The strategy is a "completely new" approach involving more of a focus on training local forces.
