Japanese military helicopters are part of the rescue effort made necessary by heavy rain and flooding, reports Reuters.
Up to 12 military helicopters and 55 members of the Self-Defense Force took part in rescues on Thursday on the main island of Honshi, said officials. People are being picked up off of their roofs.
More troops are expected to be deployed, said the officials.
Two people have been reported missing and at least 17 have been injured.
