Nine North Korean have defected and sought asylum in South Korea, say officials in Seoul cited by CNN.
The group crossed the border in the Yellow Sea in an engineless boat on Saturday, according to the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The North Koreans -- three men, two women and four children -- are reportedly being questioned by South Korean authorities about their motives and their route.
The incident is likely to raise tensions between the Koreas.
