Twenty-seven members of Iran's elite Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) were killed in a suicide bombing in the southeastern Sistan-Baluchestan province, reports Al Jazeera (Qatar).
On Wednesday, a bus carrying IRGC troops was returning from the border when a car filled with explosives blew up next to it, said an IRGC release. The bus was on the road between the cities of Zahedan and Khash when the attack happened. Armed groups and drug-smugglers are known to operate in the region, which is near the border with Pakistan.
Ten guardsmen were injured in the explosion.
The Jaish al-Adl armed group claimed responsibility for the attack, reported the semi-official Fars news agency. The group says it is fighting for greater rights for the Baluch people, noted Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
