Two people have been killed and 10 injured in a suicide attack on a police station in Bandung in Indonesia's West Java province, reports Reuters.

The suspect in Wednesday's attack was believed to be affiliated with the Islamic State-inspired group Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD). According to Indonesian police, the suspect had previously been arrested on terrorism charges and was released in 2021.

Police found dozens of papers protesting Indonesia’s new criminal code at the scene, with a note attached denouncing the new criminal code as “an infidel product”.

Police officials noted that although the law ratified on Tuesday had sharia-based provisions, Islamist hardliners were angered by articles "outlawing any ideology that goes against the state ideology ... that would also include extremist ideology."

Islamist militants have recently expanded their attacks in Indonesia, they have been significantly weakened by counterterror operations in recent years, analysts said.
