The LTTE for years controlled most of the northern coastal area of Sri Lanka and conducted operations throughout the island nation. Former rebel-held territory in eastern Sri Lanka was captured in 2006-2007 by the Sri Lanka military. In late 2008 and early 2009, the military seized the remainder of the LTTE stronghold in the north. Since then, the Tamil Tigers have not controlled any territory.
