Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb

The group was formerly known as the Salafist Group for Call and Combat (GSPC). In January 2007, the GSPC changed its official name to the Organization of Al-Qaida in the Land of Islamic Maghreb, or Al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). In March 2017, four of the group’s battalions in the Sahel reunified as the Group to Support Islam and Muslims - Jama'at Nasr al-Islam wal Muslimin or JNIM.
