Moscow's Military Position In The Caucasus

SUMMARY. Russia has emplaced an S-300 strategic air defense battery in the breakaway Georgian republic of Abkhazia, the head of the Russian air force announced Aug. 11. According to a Stratfor source, not only is this announcement true, but the S-300 system has been in place since February and should be operational soon. This deployment carries considerable military significance for Abkhazia as well as Georgia and the wider Caucasus.
