Founded by Dr. J.R. Beyster and a small group of scientists in 1969, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) went on to become the largest employee-owned research and engineering firm in the United States.
On September 1, 2005, SAIC's board of directors launched an initial public offering of common stock, with a New York Stock Exchange listing under the symbol SAIC. The IPO was completed in October 2006 and was valued at $1.2 billion. Existing employee-owners retained between 80 percent and 90 percent of the new company, maintaining the status quo of an employee-owned company.
In September 2013, SAIC changed its name to Leidos (see separate report) and spun off a $4 billion government services and information technology company, which retained the Science Applications International Corporation name. Leidos focuses on national security, engineering, and health markets, while SAIC concentrates on government IT services.
In January 2019, SAIC completed its acquisition of Engility in a deal valued at $2.5 billion. This was followed in March 2020 with the $1.2 billion acquisition of Unisys Federal. According to SAIC, the two acquisitions position the company in the growing government sectors of space and IT modernization.
