The Republic of Singapore is an island city-state of almost 6 million people located at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. The city was founded as a British trading colony in 1819, achieved self-government in 1959, and joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963. On August 9, 1965, the Malaysian Parliament voted 126-0 for separation from Singapore, resulting in the latter becoming an independent city-state.
