OVERVIEW The Republic of the Philippines consists of more than 7,000 islands, about 2,000 of which are inhabited. The government is responsible for the protection of offshore economic assets and territories. The primary defense concern of the Philippines is from two sets of insurgents -- communists based in rural areas in rural Luzon, Visayas and parts of Mindanao, and a Muslim insurgency in the southern region.
