Papua New Guinea maintains close military, economic and diplomatic ties with Australia. In 1975, it attained full independence from Australia.

A civil war was fought from 1989 to 1998 between the separatist Bougainville Revolutionary Army (BRA) and government forces. Some 20,000 people were killed during the conflict.
